When you learn or ask questions about how your beverage was crafted, you may find out that the alcohol beverage in your hand is equivalent to more than one standard drink. Remember this the next time you sip a cocktail, order a glass of wine, or select a beer as your drink of choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/a>, one standard drink or \u201cdrink equivalent\u201d contains 0.6 ounces of ethanol (the pure alcohol that is in ALL beverage alcohol).\u00a0A beverage that you drink might have more than one\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/standard-drink-sizes\/index.html\">standard drink<\/a>\u00a0of alcohol in it. Whether it is in distilled spirits, wine, or beer, the effects of ethanol on the body are the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of these standard drink examples contains the same amount of alcohol:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>12oz beer at 5% ABV&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5oz wine at 12% ABV&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.5oz distilled spirits (80 proof) at 40% ABV&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>12oz ready-to-drink beverages at 5% ABV&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To be a more informed consumer, follow these tips for understanding what is in your drink and how much alcohol you are consuming.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask questions about your beverage and its ingredients.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watch the mixologist craft your cocktail.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always measure your ingredients and your pours.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not \u201ctop off\u201d a glass.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look at the posted ABV of your distilled spirit, wine, beer, or ready-to-drink beverage. If you\u2019re drinking a canned or bottled beverage, also look at the serving size and the number of servings in that specific container.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Please remember that if you plan to drink, make arrangements to get home safely.
