During “Dry January,” there was a noticeable uptick of new year resolutions and sober curiosity. Reflecting on the impact those decisions have had, the organization is calling for a responsibility reflection—a chance for individuals to examine some of the decisions they make around alcohol consumption. This includes the frequency and quantity of drinks, the ways in which events and activities are organized, and conversations and behaviors that contribute to a responsible, balanced lifestyle.

“As warmer weather approaches, this is an ideal moment to reexamine how we responsibly choose to include alcohol in our lives and activities,” said Leslie Kimball, executive director of Responsibility.org. “For those who choose to drink, there are a number of simple steps that can ensure you stay safe and strike a balance. A responsibility reflection is a good way to step back to look at our behaviors, mindset, and balance, and it’s also helpful before hosting an event or going out for the evening. For parents, it’s a great time to include kids in these conversations, as prom and graduation season are upon us, and discussions about underage drinking prevention should be top of mind.”

As part of Alcohol Responsibility Month in April, Responsibility.org will share educational resources and host virtual activities to kick-start conversations around alcohol, its impact on the body and developing brains of youth, and how adults can be more balanced and mindful if and when they choose to drink. This includes hosting two webinars during the month; one on mindful alcohol consumption featuring author Derek Brown, and another on the progress being made in underage drinking prevention, with soccer legend and ESPN commentator Julie Foudy and the co-founders of Classroom Champions, Dr. Leigh Parise and Steve Mesler. A third webinar regarding drunk and impaired driving prevention is scheduled for early May.

“We all have a role to play during Alcohol Responsibility Month. We have made huge strides, but more work needs to be done,” said Chris Swonger, President and CEO of Responsibility.org and The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. “Eradicating irresponsible drinking behaviors, including impaired driving, requires Americans to recognize that responsibility begins with us all, and we’re determined to achieve that together. By examining our own consumption and making plans to keep ourselves and others safe, together, that’s a great step forward.”

Also taking place this month, Responsibility.org will release survey data points regarding parent and child conversations, how they have increased, the influence of parents on teen decision making, and how that has contributed to the decline of underage drinking rates in the U.S. The data will be shared later this month as the organization kicks off the 20th anniversary of its underage drinking prevention program, Ask, Listen, Learn, along with public service announcements produced in partnership with 17 U.S. Attorneys General.

To learn more about Responsibility.org’s activities during Alcohol Responsibility Month, visit www.Responsibility.org.

###

About Responsibility.org
Responsibility.org is a national not-for-profit that aims to eliminate drunk driving and work with others to end all impaired driving, eliminate underage drinking, and empower adults to make a lifetime of responsible alcohol choices as part of a balanced lifestyle.
