Among 12th grade students, 51% report they have never consumed alcohol, down 45%, proportionally, from a high of 88% in 1991, and declining 24% over the past ten years.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know many college students make responsible decisions about alcohol consumption.&nbsp;<strong>Overall, the prevalence of college drinking over the past 30 years, measured as consumption during the past 12-months, past 30-day, and binge drinking in past two weeks, continues to trend downward.<\/strong>\u202fSince 1991, annual consumption among college students declined 15% proportionally, monthly consumption has declined 27% proportionately, and binge drinking declined 49% proportionally.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This news is encouraging and shows the tremendous steps that have been taken to reduce underage drinking are working. For many students, however, transition to college life combined with the availability of alcohol and the desire to fit in to their new surroundings can lead students to make risky decisions. Dangerous overconsumption of alcohol by college students continues to be a health and safety issue in spite of laws, campus policies, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alcohol101.plus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">college programs<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/time-for-parents-discuss-risks-college-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism<\/a>, the first six weeks of a student\u2019s first year in college are a vulnerable time for harmful and underage college drinking and alcohol-related consequences because of student expectations and social pressures at the start of the academic year. College drinking not only impacts the drinking student, but also those around them even if they choose not to drink.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve gotten your kids this far, but PARENTS, YOU\u2019RE NOT DONE YET.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking to your college bound students about alcohol, underage drinking, and binge drinking is critical, and ongoing communication is key. Not all parties and clubs are equally safe!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognizing that abstaining from consuming alcohol is the safest choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Higher risk drinking is:<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Binge drinking (4 or more drinks in a day for a woman, 5 or more drinks in a day for a man)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pregaming, chugging, drinking games, drinking anything out of a punch bowl, garbage can, trough, hose or funnel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking to get drunk (intoxicated).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driving after drinking or riding with someone under the influence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking too much too fast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Going to parties where people drink too much.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Going to a party or social event alone or where you don\u2019t know anyone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not knowing what is in your glass or leaving it unattended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mixing alcohol with drugs (legal or illegal) or medications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/have-the-conversation-2.png.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8871\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/have-the-conversation-2.png.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/have-the-conversation-2.png-300x150.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/have-the-conversation-2.png-768x384.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"know-facts\"><strong>Know the facts about drinking and binge drinking in college<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many students entering college have some experience with alcohol, most are not engaging in&nbsp;binge drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though it is illegal for many college students to purchase or consume alcohol, many have had some experience with alcohol by the time they arrive on college campuses \u2013 53% of high school seniors have tried alcohol in their lifetime.&nbsp;In 2023, three out of four college students (75 percent) report they consumed alcohol in the past 12 months and 55 percent report consuming alcohol in the past 30-days, but many are over the legal drinking age when this question is asked of them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Binge drinking is not a rite of passage. The majority of college students do not binge drink and even more do not engage in extreme levels of binge drinking. According to the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/monitoringthefuture.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/mtf2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>2024 Monitoring the Future Panel Study<\/u>,<\/a> one in five (22%) college students report engaging in binge drinking (having five or more drinks in a row in the past two weeks). However, the prevalence of binge drinking among college students declined significantly (21 percent proportionally), reaching a new historic low in 2023 \u2013 from 27.7 percent in 2022 to 21.9 percent in 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High-intensity drinking (consuming 10 or more drinks in a row at least once in the past two weeks) declined significantly in 2022 but remained unchanged in 2023. One in twenty college students (5.1 percent) said they consumed 10 or more drinks in a row com. These may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s illegal to drink underage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Substance use disorders (like alcoholism) run in your family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is not in line with your family\u2019s belief system or religion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don\u2019t want to get in trouble with teachers, coaches, or residential assistants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Realize that your college-bound student will most likely be in a social situation where drinking is happening, and some of the people they are with could be of legal drinking age. Discuss how they should decide whether or not to refuse a drink, and talk about the various reasons to avoid alcohol and how and when to say &#8220;no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remind them that the decisions they make after drinking are still their decisions, and that they are responsible for them. These decisions have to be aligned with your student\u2019s values as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remind them that the legal drinking age is 21 and engaging in underage drinking is against the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refusing-drink.png.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refusing-drink.png.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refusing-drink.png-300x150.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refusing-drink.png-768x384.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"practice\"><strong>Practice situational awareness <\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that you don\u2019t want to talk about alcohol all by itself; drinking and binge drinking do not exist in a vacuum. You want to remind your student to be aware of&nbsp;why&nbsp;people are drinking and the environment in which they are drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, talk to your college-aged student about being cautious of situations or parties that are designed to conceal what\u2019s happening inside. There\u2019s probably a reason that they are held in secret, and that should be a warning sign to be extra vigilant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parties where non-drinkers aren\u2019t welcome, where the alcohol content of what is being served isn\u2019t clear (for example when a pre-mixed punch is being served), and where games are being played to accelerate and produce intoxication are higher risk. Alcohol intake should decrease when risk is increased!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to when they were little and learning to cross the street or go trick-or-treating, the college social scene is also a time to activate the \u201cbuddy system\u201d and to emphasize the importance of keeping an eye on friends and being prepared to step in if someone has overconsumed or needs help getting home safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also discuss navigating and avoiding high-risk situations. Teach your college student to never leave any drink unattended\u2014whether or not the beverage contains alcohol. And don\u2019t accept a drink from someone you don\u2019t know, especially if you did not see where it came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/situational-awareness.png.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/situational-awareness.png.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/situational-awareness.png-300x150.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.responsibility.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/situational-awareness.png-768x384.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"attitude\"><strong>Understand that attitude is everything<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to navigating the college social scene, attitude is everything. This is true whether you are discussing a positive mindset, pessimistic behavior, or throwing caution to the wind. A few things to include in your conversation are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Purposefully overconsuming\u2014drinking to get drunk\u2014is unacceptable and dangerous.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking to cope with stress, to forget problems or to try to feel comfortable in a situation that feels unsafe or threatening is never a good idea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your mindset\u2014positive or negative\u2014will impact your actions, whether you chose to drink alcohol or not.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risky decisions multiply. Create an environment of honesty and respect that will encourage your kids to come to you in any situation at every age. Encourage your student to be active and involved in campus life and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Know where your student can go for help and resources\u2014and be sure that they have this information handy. Even if they never need it or use it, they may be able to help a friend in need. Try these five tips for staying in touch with your students to support them in making healthy decisions when it comes to school, friends, and behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schedule a set time to talk and catch up with your student.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you talk, listen for warning signs such as disengagement, apathy, or symptoms of anxiety or depression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for signs of lifestyle changes in your student such as a change in appearance, demeanor, or friends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exchange contact information with your student\u2019s roommates, friends, residential assistant, or their peers\u2019 parents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow each other on social media\u2014but be aware that many young adults have multiple accounts on the same platform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents, you are doing a great job! Keep up the good work \u2013 just look at the declines in underage drinking to see the difference you are making. When you talk, your kids\u2014even your college bound kids\u2014hear you and are listening.
